FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a referral?

It’s important you have a valid referral in order to obtain a Medicare rebate. Without a valid referral, the Medicare rebate cannot be claimed and the full private fee applies.
If you do not have an Australian Medicare number but are covered by overseas insurance, you will need to pay the full fee and then claim from your overseas insurer.

Your referral will also help us to determine the urgency of your appointment. Dr Gomes endeavours to see new patients within a week of receiving their referral.
Your referral should also provide Dr Gomes your medical history and medications which may influence your diagnosis and treatment.

How long does a referral last?

A referral supplied by your GP is valid for a single course of treatment for a period of 12 months from the date you first attend your specialist appointment. The referring practitioner can also indicate an alternative time period (e.g., three, six, or 18 months or indefinite).

Please note, you will need to obtain a new referral for the following reasons, even if you have an indefinite referral:

  • If you change GPs
  • If your current GP retires
  • If your current GP moves locations

Referrals from a specialist such as Dr Gomes are valid for only three months.

How do I make an appointment?

Once you have your referral, you can book an appointment at Medihearts by calling our friendly team on 07 3310 4781.

How long will my appointment take?

How long your appointment takes will depend on a number of factors. If this is your first-time seeing Dr Gomes, he will need to gather a comprehensive account of your medical history and your current symptoms. Additional time will be added if you require any testing at your appointment. Please refer to our services page for an overview of what is involved in our diagnostic tests.
